Finding Joy
Joy can be fleeting, or can it?
Joy being connected to a short-term feeling of elation is a misnomer.
Remember, the old saying "Misery loves company"? It is true. Our nature wants someone that can relate, not someone that shows us what we are missing. It is time to set this tendency aside, allow ourselves to accept and process our current feelings, and allow ourselves to feel joy. In fact, even encourage ourselves to feel joy.We don't have to be "happy" to be filled with joy. Bare with me.
We have spent the last few weeks learning more our different body systems and how to support those. This was no mistake. Our physical and emotional states are tightly intertwined and each effects the other. A healthy gut, brain, nervous, and endocrine system frees us to properly feel and be our best selves. I am not saying it is going to be gravy from here on out, but even when times are extra stressful we can experience a peace and joy that comes from within.
Joy is the feeling evoked by well-being or success, and stems from contentment.
It is an on-going feeling, not a short-term emotion of elation or happiness. Joy can be experienced even through trauma. Knowing that we are right where we are supposed to be provides tremendous peace and contentment even in the presence of chaos and struggles. How do we find where we are "supposed to be"?
You are "supposed to be" right where you are. READ THAT AGAIN. "I am supposed to be RIGHT HERE".
It is in the "here" that we learn the lessons, make the connections, experience the love, touch others. It is the present that allows us the opportunity to hurt, to love, to experience passion, to learn and grow. It is the past (experiences and people) that has gotten us here. If we are blessed with a future it is to continue this process and use this for positive impact.
Habits to promote joy: By now I hope you are noticing some habits overlap through all of our wellness recommendations no matter your struggle.
- Deep breathing practice: 4x4x4 breathing stimulates the limbic system and resets/ reduces the stress hormones.
- Complete every morning while praying/meditating, every evening before bed, and as needed during the day.
- Drop Valor, Release, or Believe in your hand and cup over nose and mouth prior to each breath.
- Gratitude Practice (can start when stabilized, but see my video as to how this changed everything for me after we lost all worlds things due to Hurricane Irma)
- List (out loud or on paper) 3-5 gratitudes which are things, character strengths, people, or places you are thankful for.
- Complete every morning to reset perception and improve how you interact with others and challenges.
- Utilize as needed throughout day to shift mindset and thought processes. I use this with my kids when they whine or complain and still practice this daily.
- Abundance practice: Log into the library to start uplifting yourself today.
- Meditation: Faith and/or focus is a big part of this.
- Brain dumping: Keep a notebook nearby. Yes, actual pen and paper. Have a "to do list" of sticky notes up front and utilize the rest to write all ideas, concerns, and wish lists that may be fogging up your brain and keeping you from being PRESENT. This then allows you to focus on what, or who, is in front of you!
- Oil Support:
- Valor on jaw line and wrists twice a day and as needed for grounding and surety.
- Present Time oil blend on wrists daily in the am. This is a game changer. For me, it helps me set aside the lists and worries and really enjoy my time with the kids or husband.
- Joy diffused or dropped on wrists and rubbed over heart daily. This one is important. Daily use will slowly help rewire those emotions and thoughts. If you don't love the blend add a couple of drops of joy to 4 drops of Orange or North Lights spruce.
- Stress Away daily on wrists and chest/neck.
- Bedtime: Diffuse 4 drops lavender, 2 drops Believe or 3 drops gentle baby and 3 drops Higher Unity.
- As needed: Peace and calming throughout day and before bed as needed to calm anxieties and encourage deep breathing.
What to expect when you support intentionally work through a traumatic situation:
- Peace
- Ability to be present and interactive
- Greater joy and success with each tasks
- Quality interactions and connections
- Less likelihood of getting caught up in someone else's drama, and more likely to be a part of a solution and positive impact.
