Sun, Skin, & Sanity

Everyone is walking through the storm of COVID-19, social distancing, and isolation.

Each of our storms are different though.  Is yours a sprinkle, a downpour, or a hurricane? Some have transitioned to work from home.  Others are trying to work from home while home schooling and caring for small children.  While others are wishing they could work and fretting about getting by financially.  Blessed persons are enjoying the respite with family or down time to catch up on projects and books. Many of us are a mix of the above.

At Spoiledlife we always focus on the things we CAN do.  This is a skill I learned during the thick of my depression and anxiety in my twenties.  Choosing to think about what I can do prevented me from being overwhelmed, panicked, and completely unproductive.  Having this habit continues to serve me well as I walk through different seasons and different storms.

It is my hope that each of you will find a way to do the same.  Let me be clear, this does not mean deny your feelings or pretend our situation is different.  Grieve, express your feelings, cry, shout, laugh, be thankful.  Do it all, but each day make sure you are relying on your strengths and your capabilities to keep stepping forward.

Please take this time to send a message to a friend or acquaintance and find out what their storm level is; and PLEASE reach out to someone and share you storm.  Realize you are not truly alone, and connection during this time makes a huge difference in our outlook and SANITY and how we will move forward when this is all done.  If you have been following along we have provided many tools to help you ease anxiety, relieve stress, and support your mind and bodies.  These can all be found by searching our library or perusing our previous articles.

Most of us are experiencing longer and warmer days.  I am ever so grateful as our 800sq/feet provides limited space for school work, trumpet practicing, and working.  It gets loud, messy, and congested fast.  Being outdoors is our respite, and we have each found our ways to get out and stay productive.  Along with this comes sunshine.

Bring on the vitamin D

Vitamin D is imperative for so many bodily functions. Most cells in our body have Vitamin D receptors and require it for proper function.  Very few foods actually provide this lipid soluble vitamin.  Fat solubility is also why many D3 vitamins are ineffective and why supplements combined with oils or from plants are most effective.  This is also why NATURAL UV exposure and choice in sunscreen are so important.  Few dietary sources exists;  and our American diet and approach to sunscreen lends us towards vitamin D deficiency.

Benefits of vitamin D...

  • MOOD
  • Calcium and Phosphorous regulation and uptake
  • Immune function and anti carcinogenic function
  • Nervous system health
  • Population at risk:  those with fatty breakdown issues (gallbladder, IBS, Crones, Celiac, etc..) gastric bypass, limited sun exposure, elderly (due to reduced melatonin and ability to process vitamin D), certain melatonin types.
  • Natural Sources of Vitamin D:  UV Rays, egg yolk, some mushrooms, fatty fish, fish oil, beef liver, natural cheese
  • Improved feelings of happiness, confidence, grounding

  • Good Vitamin D recommendation

Detriments of most sunscreens:

  • Chemicals are carcinogenic
  • Many don't cover UVA
  • Chemical disrupt hormone regulation
  • Block Vitamin D
  • aerosols:  PLEASE NEVER USE THESE.  These are so bad for your lungs and body and the chemicals are rapidly absorbed.
  • Heavy metal exposure

My recommendation?  GET OUTSIDE!

Seriously, get out in the sunshine.  Read a book, play sports, go for a walk, do our exercises of the month 😉 or just eat outside!  We have a wonderful opportunity to treat our bodies and our skin during this time.

  1. Each morning utilize our homemade skin/sun  protection spray as lotion.  (see recipes in the library)
    1. This is the only sun protection my family (even babies) utilized for years here in florida!  NO BURNS.  It is safe for faces and actually can moisturize and improve skin appearance!
  2. Keep our spray handy for reapplication or snag a Non-nano, chemical free mineral sunscreen like my favorite by Young Living.  Why?  It lasts an entire season for the family, it is safe, effective, and absorbs completely without leaving them white ( a sign of non-nano).  It is comparable in price to others like Badger except if purchased with their rewards program you get up to 20% back making it a great deal.
  3.  Once a week apply our DIY charcoal mask or treat your skin to our sugar scrub (all found in. the library under recipes).  This is an affordable way to treat your skin, improve appearance, reduce wrinkles and decrease effects of stress and sun!  Check out last months articles or our protocols for our full skin routine to come out of this glowing!
